These are celebratory moments for Valencia College, Akobo, as one of her students, Olowookere Oluwatobi Olaniran, has emerged as one of the top performer in this year’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), shooting the 7-year old institution to national prominence.
Tobi returned a score of 351 out of a possible 400, and should the statistics reported by the Head of Information, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Dr. Fabian Benjamin, that nearly 1.6 million candidates registered for the examination, then Master Olowookere’s feat becomes all the more laudable. Having scored 82 in Use of English, 92 in Mathematics, 92 in Physics and 85 in Chemistry, he is set to join the league of top notchers in the yearly examination, getting inducted into the Hall of Fame Bosun Adeoti (347) in the year 2000 was the first advertised inductee.
Born Olowookere Oluwatobi Olaniran on 11 October, 2001, this doyen, is no stranger to dizzying academic heights; having made 8 distinctions, including in perceived difficult subjects like Further Mathematics and Technical Drawing, in his first attempt of the General Certificate in Education (GCE) examination as an SS2 student, and all-round distinctions in 15 subjects in the Junior Secondary School Certificate Examination (JSSCE). As representative of Valencia College, Akobo, in school-based competitions, he emerged second out of a total 1690 students who sat the 2015 Cowbell Mathematics Cowbellpedia Competition in Oyo State, as well as coming first in Oyo-stste in the 2016 edition of the NNPC’s science competition.
Impressive as Master Olowookere’s achievements are, watchers of events in the education industry may not be surprised, especially being a student of Valencia College. This is because, though the College began operations in September, 2011, she has continued to punch above her weight; raking in accolades, awards and honours almost on a phenomenal basis, to the excitement of stakeholders and the consternation of competitors. From being named Oyo State’s Most Outstanding Private Secondary School by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) to clinching the House of Representatives Committee on Education’s Outstanding Private School Merit Award, her students have been serial winners in several competitions; clinching the top three positions in the Nigerian Mathematics and Science Olympiads (Junior Science), Jaiyeoba Segun, Kola-Adebayo Murewa and Alabi Busayo ensured Valencia College claimed all available spots on the podium, as Adeyinka Oreoluwa and Ajibola Michael came first and third respectively, in the Senior Science section. Further to that, not only did the school come tops in the Bethel American Annual Debate Competition, but also did Adaji Williams, come first in the 2016 NNPC Science Competition in Oyo State, as Kola-Adebayo Murewa won the Alliance Francaise 2016 French Quiz Competition. These laurels are directly traceable to the strong culture of excellence, hardwork and commitment espoused by the founder/proprietor, Engr. Goodness Morakinyo, whose strategic decision to employ only the best minds available contributed immensely to Master Olowookere’s epochal outing.
With a stellar cast comprising Wale Ojo (B.Eng Civil Engineering, LAUTECH (First Class), M.Eng Civil Engineering, UI, PGDE) handling Mathematics, Abisoye Okunola (B.Eng Civil Engineering (First Class), FUNAAB, M.Eng Civil Engineering, UI) taking Physics, Folarin Sholaru (B.Eng, M.Eng, Petroleum Engineering, UI), and Samson Adeloye (B.Tech Pure and Applied Chemistry, LAUTECH) both handling Organic Chemistry and Physical/Calculations in Chemistry, respectively, Akinwale Balogun (B.Sc Mathematics, OAU) taking Further Mathematics and Nathaniel Okpeke (B.A, M.A., Communication and Language Arts, UI, PGDE, NTI) tutoring Use of English, success is but a given. It therefore goes without saying that Master Olowookere was forged in the fiery furnace of academic excellence exemplified by this all conquering cast. It is important to add that the current trend of posting high scores in UTME isn’t to mean that the exam has become simpler, but a reflection of the massive investment today’s schools put into the detailed preparation of students.
Engr. Morakinyo reacting, maintained that as founder/proprietor of Valencia Schools, it is a big encouragement for members of the entire school community. Said he; “there is one thing I have always reiterated to my students – hardwork pays. I am sure with this, they will understand better.” He concluded that this achievement “is the opening of another chapter for the school; vowing that the school will do her best to surpass this new record.”
Master Olowookere on his own part attributed his performance to God, his parents, school, teachers and classmates. Said he; “my classmates have been very wonderful. They provide a friendly environment which makes learning fun”.
It is instructive to note that Valencia College, Akobo, whose processes, procedures and policies are guided by the simple belief that every child matters, and is able to cater for students with a wide range of learning abilities, is better suited to produce geniuses like Master Olowookere, and well placed to nurture others not so imbued. With the highest degree of warmth, passionate tutoring, and emotional intelligence sessions, all students are encouraged to aspire to greater heights.
For Master Olowookere, a boarding student, the home away from home boast of the College is strikingly justified. It is evident, that whether at home or in the boarding house, Valencia College students enjoy maximum attention and care from a wide range of professional teachers and counsellors; little wonder geniuses are produced at such an incredible rate.
As the nation celebrates Master Olowookere, whose life ambition is to proceed to the Machechuchet Instutute of Technology(MIT) in the United States , hence, his continuous burning of the midnight candle, with a view to obtaining the maximum obtainable score in SAT and TOEFL, he has been urged by lovers of education not to relent in the trend he has become associated with, but rather forge ahead in the race of academic excellence. It is just a matter of time for MIT to snap up this prodigious talent. These are celebratory moments for Valencia College, Akobo, as one of her students, Olowookere Oluwatobi Olaniran, has emerged as one of the top performer in this year’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), shooting the 7-year old institution to national prominence.
